Our Tirta Empul handbag has the traditional Bali handbag shape. This shape is the most common shape of the Bali handbags we offer. The lid opens fully at a 45 degree angle allowing all your valuable to rest inside without spilling out. The handbag is closed with the help of the button clasp which matches the leather strap securing it to your shoulder.
The intricate textile on the inside of the bag is hand woven and chosen by the Balinese families that we work with who hand make the bags just for you. These rattan handbags are extremely popular amongst tourists on The Island of Bali because they are the quintessential Bali handbag and we are excited to provide them to the rest of the world. The Balinese make each bag by hand with love and all natural materials and truly enjoy sharing a bit of their culture with you.
This handbag is named after the Tirta Empul Temple in central Bali. The name Tirta Empul means “holy water spring” after the water source located within the temple. The temple was built in 960 AD during the time of the Warmadewa Dynasty.
Rattan is a strong and pliable natural material which comes from the tropical plant Calamus Rotang which grows in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. The rattan stems of this plant are as long as 300 meters and are used in many cultures to make furniture and other wickerwork items.
Rattan is harvested by removing the bark of the Calamus Rotang plant and peeling off the rattan stems which are then dried, formed into any shape, and then dyed to their desired color.
Our Rattan handbags are handmade on The Island of Bali in Indonesia with natural materials sourced on the island, namely rattan, organic cotton, and genuine cow leather. We work directly with several Balinese families who create these amazing bags for you.
